What is Self - Reliance?
Camp Fire USA recognizes that children may face emergency situations or danger when an adult is not present. To meet this need, Camp Fire USA offers the Self-Reliance Program. *Self-Reliance courses are led by trained instructors using national curricula.
'At Camp Fire I learn to say no to drugs and alcohol and cigarettes and don't run off or you might end up missing or harmed and your parents might not see you again and it can be people you know so you have to be careful' Tamiya, Price Elementary School
A great need for families today is that children learn to be self reliant and act responsibly and independently in various environments. To respond to that need, Camp Fire began delivering Self - Reliance courses in 1983 in classrooms, after-school facilities, and camps. Since that time more than a million children have been taught skills that deal with personal safety, being a responsible family member, handling peer pressure, dealing with bullies, and caring about others as well as themselves.
Self - Reliance programs are built on five principles; respect, responsibility, trust, caring, and the family. We build on these principles through role play, puppet shows, games, activity sheets, discussions and other fun activities.
The overall goal of the program is to help children be a contributing family member by learning self-help and safety skills that will help them be able to cope with different situations, sometimes independent of parent or adult supervision. The programs help children learn the importance of living safely and avoiding unnecessary risks. They also help children build a positive self-image by building confidence. Each program uses the McRel Education Standards to measure effectiveness.
There are four Self - Reliance programs. 'Im Safe and Sure' for K - 1st grade students; 'Count On Me' Kids for 1st - 2nd grade students; 'I Can Do It' for 2nd - 3rd grade students and 'Im Peer Proof' for 4th - 5th grade students. Program sessions last from 45 minutes to an hour and are presented one day per week for six to eight weeks.
