Camp Fire USA recognizes that children may face emergency situations or danger when an adult is not present.  To meet this need, Camp Fire USA offers the Self-Reliance Program.  *Self-Reliance courses are led by trained instructors using national curricula.

Program Goals:

  • Counselor/Teacher Program Information

  • Develop a positive self-image based on a feeling of being confident and capable
  • Develop an awareness of the importance of living safely and avoiding unnecessary risks
  • Teach skills needed to function responsibly and independently
  • Help children resist peer pressure to engage in antisocial or dangerous behavior
  • Help children and their parents discuss concerns and experiences with peer relationships
  • Help children cope with emergency situations when parents are not readily available to provide assistance

The Four Self - Reliance Programs:

"I'm Safe and Sure" is Camp Fire's Crime prevention program that focuses on personal safety and responsible citizenship.  Eight 45 minute sessions teach children how to respond to dangerous situations; help children feel good about themselves and their ability to cope with unexpected situations; contributing to the child's social development by reinforcing a respect for laws; and teach children how to handle conflict without violence.  The combination of safety and citizenship in "Im Safe and Sure' offers an integrated approach to developing desired behaviors and attitudes in young children.  *This Program is for K - 1st Grade Students.

"Count on Me" KIDS! This course was developed through funding from the Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (O.S.A.P.).  'Count On Me' Kids is designed to help young children develop a strong, positive self-image and positive character traits through emphasis on the importance of healthy lifestyles, encouraging children to do their best.  The 'Count On Me' Kids course is comprised of eight 60 minute sessions.  Each session is designed to meet specific objectives related to the goals of the course.  *This Program is for K - 2nd Grade Students.

"I Can Do It!" is a unique educational experience.  Camp Fire offers this six session course to help children learn become self-reliant, contributing members to their families and take responsibility for their own care and protection.  The overall purpose of the 'I Can Do It' course is to teach children self-help skills, including home safety, personal safety and family responsibility.  The course is designed to prepare children to be able to cope with all kinds of life situations, independent of parental or adult supervision.  *This Program is for 2nd - 3rd Grade Students.

"I'm Peer-Proof" is designed as a five session course to build the self-reliance of children when involved in both positive and negative peer relationships.  The course teaches assertiveness as a means of building positive friendships and resisting negative peer relationships.  Course evaluations have shown that 'Im Peer Proof' does in fact increase knowledge and expectations of assertive behavior.  *This Program is for 4th - 5th Grade Students.
