It was a Thursday in June at Camp Fletcher, and the sounds of happy children rang out across our 270 acres of woodlands. That’s when the sirens began to blare. Our trained staff ushered the young campers into the safest structure at camp—the pool house. It was a tight squeeze, but we were able to fit everyone inside the sturdy cinderblock building. We were fortunate that day, and the severe weather passed. Our campers and staff were safe, and our property was untouched.

Summer camp is the experience of a lifetime—a joyful and carefree place where young people play and learn in a nurturing environment; but a lot of hard work and training goes on behind the scenes to ensure that Camp Fletcher is both a fun and safe place for all of our campers.

Great things are happening at Camp Fire Alabama and Camp Fletcher. Camp Firecrackera week of overnight camp for children and youth with a primary diagnosis of ADHD, was a huge success in its pilot run this summer and we’ve expanded and improved the network of trails throughout camp thanks to volunteer efforts from youth groups and wonderful corporate citizens like Starbucks, Daxko, Alabama Power, ProctorU, and Yanfeng Automotive.

Camp Fletcher has always been a place of learning, but it’s more of an outdoor classroom now than ever before. Today’s campers mitigate summer learning loss through our reading and STEM-focused garden curricula. They also learn valuable life skills such as how to kindly disagree, the value of teamwork, and how to listen.

This magical place is as vital and relevant to our community today as it was on the day founder Pauline Fletcher opened the gates in 1926, but we can only serve as many campers at one time as we can safely shelter in an emergency. Will you help us fulfill our promise to serve more children, youth, and families? If so, please make your secure, online, tax-deductible donation HEREDonations can also be mailed to: Camp Fire Alabama  /  106 Oxmoor Road, Ste. 152  /  Birmingham, AL  35209.
